A diagnostic procedure in which amniotic fluid is withdrawn by needle from the uterus of a pregnant woman. The fluid and fetal cells are then analyzed for chromosome defects.

Infections may play a bigger role in premature birth than doctors have thought, says a new study that found almost one in seven women in preterm labour harboured bacteria or fungi in their amniotic fluid.
