[Can J Psychiatry. 1989] - PubMed Result: Methylphenidat e (MPT) was prescribed four days after an uncomplicated appendectomy in a 27 year old woman who had suffered from bulimia nervosa (BN) for at least nine years. Before the onset of appendicitis, her bingeing and self-induced vomiting had occurred several times daily. With MPT the patient reported a calm emotional state and an absence of temptation to binge or to induce vomiting. Previously published reports of treatment of BN with MPT could not be found. This may be the first. Vulnerability to surgical disorders and to postoperative complications as well as the safety and efficacy of MPT in patients suffering from BN deserve furth
• Bulimia nervosa and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a possible role for stimulant medication. [J Womens Health (Larchmt). 2005] - PubMed Result: Data from these case reports suggest a possible benefit of screening for ADHD as part of the overall evaluation of bulimia. In addition, these cases suggest the potential role of psychostimulan ts in the management of bulimia because of the high rate of abstinence from bulimic symptoms and the low rate of adverse side effects. Clinical trials are needed to fully evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of psychostimulan ts in the treatment of bulimia nervosa.
• Efficacy of methylphenidat e in bulimia nervosa comorbid with attention-defi cit hyperactivity disorder: a case report. [Int J Eat Disord. 1997] - PubMed Result: This case describes the beneficial effect on the binge eating component of bulimia nervosa of methylphenidat e, which was prescribed to treat comorbid attention-defi cit/hyperactiv ity disorder. Possible mechanisms of action are discussed.
• Methylphenidat e treatment for bulimia nervosa associated with a cluster B personality disorder. [Int J Eat Disord. 1999] - PubMed Result: MPH may be useful for bulimics with cluster B personality disorder who respond poorly to conventional treatment. Further studies of MPH administration may be worthwhile. Due to the potential risks, however, clinical treatment with this agent is not recommended at this time.
